The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme

Building a Better Shared Future

We have an ambition to take the impact of The Boat Race beyond the Oxford and Cambridge university boat clubs.

The Boat Race Company delivers one of the highest profile rowing events in the world. Our three-pronged strategy enable us to do this, including a focus on building a better shared future.

As we ‘Help build a better shared future’, we are developing a number of strategic initiatives to help deliver this better shared future. With our The Boat Race 2021 Principal Partner, Gemini, we want to make a difference to young people in local communities whether in London, Cambridge, Oxford or further afield. Believing in the transformative potential of sport, we are using the profile of the race to inspire other young people.

Ambition of The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme

Ahead of the 2021 Boat Race and with the support of Gemini and its founders, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, The Boat Race Company has created The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme. The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme supports our goals to engage young people across the UK to help develop physical and mental well-being, alongside life and academic skills.

The bursary is made up of two parts; the Bursary Award (which has been awarded to two well established organisations) and the Bursary Fund together they make up the scheme.

Removing barriers

Gemini and the Boat Race Company are committed to lessening financial hurdles and widening access to a new generation of rowers. The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme will alleviate obstacles, such as access to rowing kit and equipment, increase awareness across communities and give logistical support including travelling to and from the rowing club to ensure students feel comfortable and safe.

Increasing inclusion

The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme aims to engage a new generation of potential rowers across a broader range of socio-economic backgrounds and build a bridge between sport and underserved communities. The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme will provide rowing instruction, mentorship, facilities, and education to students by removing the financial barriers that often prevent them from taking part.

Working with partner organisations

This is an ambitious initiative, and we seek to work with transformative organisations able to deliver life changing experiences through sport. Through collaboration with grassroots engagement experts this initiative aims to give young people access to a sport they may not have had the opportunity to find before. The Gemini Boat Race Bursary Scheme will work with organisations who utilise rowing machines as well as rowing boats and whose ambitions for young people go beyond sport.
